I don't usually like to blow my own horn but this is a picture of my front yard in the second week of spring. Rockcress is usually one of the first plants to flower.

This ligularia has been devestated by earwigs. An ideal way to deal with this problem (without using chemicals) is to spread diatomaceous earth around the base of the plant on a regular basis.

Slugs love hosta! There's no two ways about it. But one way of fixing this problem is to leave inch deep dishes of beer under your plants (malt beers seem to attract them best!). The aroma attracts the slugs and they drown in the beer. Just change them about once a week.
